Ron Mendell

Business Development Manager (Austin)

Ron Mendell is responsible for identifying and developing commercial and government opportunities for business engagements and strategic partnerships originating in the North Texas region of the United States.

Ron is a writer, researcher and lecturer on topics relating to computer security, investigative matters, industrial espionage, and business intelligence. He recently joined the faculty of Our Lady of the Lady University in San Antonio, Texas as a Distinguished Visiting Lecturer in the School of Business, Computer Information Systems and Security program.  He also taught the CISSP Certification class as an Adjunct Instructor at Austin Community College in Austin, Texas.

For thirteen years, Ron worked as a legal investigator on diverse cases ranging from product liability to medical malpractice to financial investigations. Holding a B.S. degree in the Humanities from the University of the State of New York, he completed computer security training at Ohio University and at the University of Texas at Austin and criminal investigation coursework at the University of Oklahoma. Capitol College in Laurel, Maryland granted him a Master of Science degree in Network Security in 2005.  In addition, he earned the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) designation in November 2005.

His article, “Can Security Pierce the Electronic Veil?” received the Society of Business Press Editors’ National Award for Editorial Excellence (January 1998, Security Management). He wrote “Hiding Money in Plain Sight” for the March 2002 edition of White-Collar Crime Fighter. Security Management carried his viewpoint article, “Is Terrorism Obscuring the Information Threat?” in its April 2003 issue. A book review of Using the Common Criteria appeared in November 2004’s Security Management. The ISSA Journal published his article on intelligence gathering in December 2005.

He also has four published books.  Charles C. Thomas published The Quiet Threat: Fighting Industrial Espionage in America, in June 2003. Charles C. Thomas released Investigating Computer Crime in the 21st Century in 2004.

He started writing professionally in 1994 with the first edition of How to Do Financial Asset Investigations.  (Charles C. Thomas plans a release of a third edition in October 2006.)  Recently, The ISSA Journal published his articles on “Insider Attacks” in its May 2006 issue and on “Internet Rhetoric” in August 2006.  Security Management published his review of Computer Evidence: Collection & Preservation in the August 2006 issue.

Ronald works in technical support and does technical writing for a high-tech company in Austin, Texas.  His latest speaking engagement was at TRISC 2006 in Houston regarding a scenario for an attack on a Texas supercomputer.  In September 2006 he spoke on “The Future of Computer Crime” before the World Future Society of Austin.
